William Trost Richards was born in Philadelphia on November 14, 1833. In 1846 and 1847 he attended the local Central High School.
Between 1850 and 1855 he studied part-time with the German artist Paul Weber while working as a designer and illustrator for decorative metalwork.
In the last years of his life he traveled regularly to Europe and visited England, Scotland and Norway. He died on November 8, 1905 in Newport, Rhode Island, United States.
