At the Seaside, 1892

From 1891 to 1902, Chase was the director of the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art in the city of Southampton on Long Island, New York. Chase taught two days a week and spent the rest of his time painting and enjoying time with his family. On this canvas, women and children relax on a beach, probably along Shinnecock Bay. The picture is framed by a vast sky that fills the upper half of the canvas. The whirling clouds are artfully reminiscent of the bright white shapes of children's clothes and the parasol.
