Women Picking Olives, 1889
The myth of Van Gogh is shaped by his mysterious illness, which doctors have probably wrongly diagnosed as epilepsy, which influenced the artist's suicide. The autodidact from the Netherlands created around 800 paintings from 1,100 works on paper in a short period of just ten years. His conception of art can be reconstructed from the 820 letters received from the painter. In addition to the paintings, the letters translated into German in 1905 were important points of reference for the expressionists' avant-garde.
