Most of the people depicted in the painting are tiny. It is mainly craftsmen and stonemasons who are tirelessly busy with the construction of the building. In the stone shell, it mixes ancient and Romanesque architectural elements. Bruegel's visit to Rome in 1553 apparently influenced his portrayal of the Colosseum.
