Five figures in space, Roman; 1925

The painting was originally owned by the Folkwang Museum in Essen, where it was confiscated by the National Socialists in 1937 and shown at the defamatory exhibition “Degenerate Art” in Munich. Through the brokerage of the Karl Buchholz book and art dealer in Berlin, the Kunstmuseum Basel bought it in 1939. In the museum's copper engraving cabinet there is also a first pencil sketch for the painting (inv. No. 1953.139), which Schlemmer gave the title “Roman”, as well as a watercolor study.
