The Dam in Amsterdam against City Hall and Nieuwe Kerk, 1670
The Dam is the main square in Amsterdam. Van der Heyden and also other artists like Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde depicted Damplatz repeatedly. A similar view of the square, but in portrait format is in the Amsterdam Historical Museum (Inv. SA 7332). The Staffage is a bit varied there, but "The boy with the tire" also appears. According to Helga Wagner, the Basel picture is Van der Heyden's last version of the Damplatz view.
