Italian Landscape with Umbrella Pines, 1807
Voogd was referred to as the "Dutch Claude" after the French painter Claude Lorrain, who was known for his scenes of history bathed in brilliant light. Late in the evening Voogd painted the green spaces of Villa Borghese in Rome. The sun casts long shadows and the trees emerge powerfully against the sky. Walking figures emerge out of the brilliant twilight. In the foreground is a craftsman who is drawing on a tree.
