In 1933 Schrimpf received a professorship in Berlin at the State University for Art Education in Berlin-Schöneberg. In 1938 he was dismissed from service because of his former membership in the SPD 1910–1911, in the KPD January – April 1919, in the Red Aid 1925–1926, but received 3/4 of the last salary. His works were removed from the "Degenerate Art" exhibition; he was not considered degenerate, although works, including the two Basel paintings, had been confiscated by the Nazi regime.
