Ferdinand Hodler had already captured the Jonction landscape near Geneva, where the Rhone and the Arve flow together, in several paintings in 1878. There is a second privately owned version of the Basel composition on the banks of the Rhone, which is lined with willow trees, and is regarded as a replica of the same time.
